7 Steps to Grow Your Blog
From choosing a platform to SEO, this is how you can grow your blog from zero to number one on search engines.
Growing a blog people actually read is hard work, but it all comes down to the decisions you make and the habits you keep: what platform do you use, what do you write about, how do you write about it, how often do you publish, and most importantly (to avoid burnout) do you enjoy this work enough to keep going?
In this short guide, we will walk you through these decisions and give you a bit of advice on how to grow your blog.
1. Choose a platform where you can grow your blog
Before you think about traffic or monetization, you need a home for your blog that fits your goals and skills. Not all platforms are created equal. Depending on the features and technical side of how the platform is set up, some of them will be easier to grow on than others.
When you choose a platform, consider these things in order to lay the foundation for growth on your blog.
How easy is the platform to use?
If you’re comfortable with tweaking settings or coding, you might want a platform that gives you more flexibility, but if you hate tech, choose a platform that lets you focus on writing and publishing from the start. Pick a platform with a simple editor and easy-to-use publishing tools. Some of them even come with built-in templates.
How much do you want to customize?
Some platforms have a preset look to them, but some let you control fonts, colors, layout, and basic branding, so your blog can grow into a recognizable brand.
Is it built for SEO?
This is a must. Look for a platform with built-in SEO options like titles you can edit and meta descriptions, good URL structure, and pages that load fast. These make it easier for Google to understand and rank your posts, which will be a big contributor to the growth of your blog.

2. Choose the topics you will write about
One of the fastest ways to stall growth (and burn out) is trying to write about everything for everyone. Niche blog topics help you stand out from the crowd, attract the right kind of readers, and make brainstorming ideas for content easier. When you find your niche, putting together a content calendar will also be much easier.
Think about these three things:
What is your niche?
This is the main topic you cover, like “beginner photography,” “budget travel,” or “freelance writing tips.” A niche that solves real problems or answers questions people are actively asking (based on search data) has better potential for growth.
What is your angle?
Two blogs can share a niche but feel totally different. If the main topic you write about is budget travel, your angle might be “minimalist travel,” “travel tips for retired people,” or “travel destinations for people with dogs.” This makes your blog memorable.
Your audience
This is one of the most important things to understand. Who are you writing for, and what do they want from you?
3. How often you post on your blog influences growth
Posting consistently is important for growing your newsletter, but when it comes to growing a blog, the most important thing is producing content that is really high quality. But think about it: if you post one blog post per week, you can have 52 posts on your blog in a year. That is enough posts to generate a nice steady flow of organic traffic.
The important thing is to start now and don’t give up. If you write it, they will read it, especially if you put in the time to create content that you would want to read.
4. Create high quality content to grow your blog
Your blog cannot grow without content that is worth reading, sharing, and returning to. But what is high quality content? It means content that is useful, clear, and easy to follow.
Define a clear purpose for your content
You should write every post with a clear purpose. An article should answer one main question or solve one main problem. If your post tries to do five things at once, readers will get confused and leave. The time they spend on the page influences your SEO rankings.
Create a strong structure for your posts
Follow Google’s outline for SEO and structure your posts well. Use headings, short paragraphs, and bullet points so readers can scan the article easily. Break your post into sections that move logically from problem to solution.
Add real value
Share steps, examples, templates, or scripts that people can actually use. Don’t just tell them “be consistent”—show them what that looks like in a weekly content plan.
Use language that is easy to read
Use everyday language, words you would use to talk to your friends about the topic. Write your article in a way that avoids jargon when possible. When you need to, explain any technical terms that come up naturally. Always remember that you’re writing for humans first, not algorithms.
A simple outline for most posts includes these:
Hook: one or two lines that show you understand the reader’s problem.
Short intro: what the article will cover and why it is important.
Main sections: separate your sections clearly using H2 or H3 headings. Don’t skip heading levels in that hierarchy.
Quick recap and CTA: what to do after reading.
5. Use basic SEO to grow organic traffic
You don’t need to be an SEO expert to grow a blog, but you do need the basics. Search engine optimization helps your content show up in many Google search features when people search for topics you write about.
To get started with SEO, focus on a few key habits.
One main keyword per post
Pick one main keyword that matches what your post is really about. This can be a keyword like sports blog for an article on “how to start a sports blog.” Use it in your title, the first paragraph of your article, and in at least one heading, as well as a few times in the body of your text.
Use headings and structure
Use H2 and H3 headings. The headings should be clear phrases that are related to your topic. Make them as descriptive as possible, but don’t make them too long. This helps both your readers and search engines understand the structure of your post.
Internal and external links
Link to your own related posts so readers stay on your site longer, and link to trusted external sources when it adds value. This builds the credibility of your website and helps search engines crawl your content.
Focus on giving users a good experience
Make sure your pages load fast and your page has a design that is mobile-friendly. A good user experience keeps readers around for longer.
Always keep in mind that SEO is a long game. It works over months, not days. Even though you won’t see results immediately, it’s still one of the best things you can invest time in to grow your blog in the long run.
6. Share your blog beyond your blog
Just because SEO takes a while to generate traffic doesn’t mean you don’t have other ways to help your blog grow faster. One of the best ways to start is by sharing your posts where your audience already spends time: on social media. The other way is to share it with your biggest fans: friends and family.
And finally, enjoy writing!
The most important thing to keep in mind is why you started this project in the first place. If you do not enjoy the process, it will be very hard to stay focused on achieving your goals. Enjoy every step of the writing process and have fun with every step.
The first step towards this is t choose a platform that removes as many obstacles as possible. Fika is a free writing platform designed to help you write more often, publish consistently, and earn through paid newsletters.
